Natural remedies for smelly feet
There are some natural, home remedies which you could try to control your smell feet problem before visiting a doctor or chemist.
Some may work for you so it's worth experimenting until you find something that helps your smelly feet.
A lemon rub can help smelly feet
Lemon is an excellent anti-bacterial agent and taking half a lemon and rubbing them over the soles of your feet can temporarily eradicate odour-causing bacteria and leave them smelling and feeling much better.
A pinch of salt can reduce foot odour
Well, a bit more than a pinch really. Soaking your feet in salt water can have a similar anti-bacterial effect to using lemon.
Healthy eating
If you eat sweets and junk food to excess then there's a good chance this will make your feet smell worse. You don't need to cut out the treats completely but the more healthily you eat, the less of a problem you will have with foot odour.
Cutting out strong smelling foods like onions and garlic can help, too, as enzymes in these foods can lead to smelly feet.
Drink water
Everyone gets tired of being nagged into drinking more water but it really can help with smelly feet, particularly if you notice that your feet occasionally smell of ammonia (urine). That's a sign that you aren't drinking enough water and the toxins that are usually passed in urine are instead being sweated out. Drink a couple of extra glasses a day and see if that makes a difference.
Time for tea (yes, it can help with foot odour)
One simple and well documented solution is to wipe your feet with tea, using a poultice or compress made from tea bags.
This can help reduce the unpleasant smell of sweaty feet. It is the tannic acid found in tea that does the job.
It is simple to to, too. Just make a pint of strong tea and mix it with four pints of cool water. Place this is in a bowl and then submerge your feet in the bowl for about half an hour every day.
Turnip juice
Turnip and radish juice are natural deodorants so you could try giving your feet a rub with these marvellous odour-busting root vegetables.
Ginger bath
take a hot bath with some ginger in it and have a good soak. It is said this will help you sweat out all those unpleasant body toxins that can cause smelly feet.
Spot cream can help smelly feet
Topical acne cream can help as many of the bacteria that cause acne, also cause smelly feet. Use a benzoyl peroxide cream of 5%, which can be bought at your chemist, and this should help clear the problem.
Try an antiperspirant on your feet
Take a look around your local chemist and you will find there are specialist deodorants available to deal with smelly feet.
However, they maybe pricey and you will find that a normal underarm antiperspirant will work just as well and will cost you less too.
The easiest way of doing this with a ball or roll-on deodorant, which applies the solution direct to your feet.
For best results, use twice a day.
Cornstarch your shoes
This is a helpful way of masking odour but it won't treat the root of the problem so use this in conjunction with other methods.
